First published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book, The Cask of Amontillado is set in 19th century Italy and concerns the deadly revenge taken by the insane narrator on a friend who he claims has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive.
Amontillado ... a wine to die for! I have to listen to the beginning again several times, to see if I can excavate any clues on what Fortunata had supposedly done to "deserve his fate".
Poe Iand indeed many in the late 1800's) had a horror / fixation on the idea of possibly being buried alive. Did you ever see Vincent Price in "The Pit and the Pendulum"? The character of Elizabeth is unwittingly sealed into a dungeon ... But she really deserved it!
