Crayon attributes it to Diedrich Knickerbocker. Both Geoffrey Crayon and Diedrich Knickerbocker were the creatures of the actual author, Washington Irving. To this day, New Yorkers who claim the Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam as their ancestors are known as Knickerbockers.
